“Boy Without a Flag”

In the story “The Boy Without a Flag” by Abraham Rodriguez Jr., the boy named Abraham struggles throughout his life in order to stand up for what he believes in. He refuses to stand up for the pledge of allegiance and stand up for his Puerto Rican rights. But instead of being praised he dealt with many consequences including being called rebellious. The Flag in the story represents the freedom that the boy is trying to attain. He denies standing up for the pledge of allegiance because he does not believe in it and decides to be loyal to his country. I think the boy is a good American because Americans are supposed to stand up for what they believe in and Americans have a choice in what they decide to believe in. The boy says, “Why should a Puerto Rican salute the American flag?”(pg20). This shows how Abraham believes he should not be forced to salute the American flag and he is right Americans are free and should be able to decide to salute the American flag or not. The narrator did the right thing because it is his choice whether he wants to salute the flag or not and he should have the choice to believe in what he wants. The narrator has an American dream to have freedom and have the choice of what he has to do and what he believes in. I think this was a very inspirational story for many people who have dealt with similar issues as Abraham. It teaches you to stand up for what you believe and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

What is an American?

One trait is bieng free. They have a choice in life. It’s important because they can choose what it is that they want to do in life like if someone wants to be rich they have choices they could play the lottery or work hard to earn money, they could even rob a bank if they wanted to.

Another trait of an American is Determination. It’s important for you to have determination. It’s important to have determination so that you can actually achieve your goals because nothing that’s worth having in this life ever comes easy.

The third trait I think is important to be an American is hope. In this life you have to have hope. The reason why having hope is important is due to the fact that we don’t always get what we want, but we need to have hope in that we will someday be able to obtain what it is we are hoping to get.

“Messages from the Sky” by Fred Moramarco

Through out the poem people are saying goodbye to their parents, wives, and children. This poem is about the 9/11 incident. While reading this poem I thought of how hard it was for all those to know that they where going to die and not be able to do nothing about it especially the young ones who where to young to know what was happening. This poem made me feel sad to know that all those people had to suffer for no good reason. My favorite line in the poem would have to be “Mommy, the building is on fire, there’s smoke coming through the walls, I can’t breathe. I love you Mommy, goodbye.” The reason why I chose this line was because I couldn’t help but feel bad for that poor little girl.

The first time I heard about the 9/11 incident was when I first got home and I saw my mom watching the news. Once I got home I just sat down with my family and started watching the news. At first I thought that this was unreal, for someone to do that to all those people just because someone tells you to. After it was all over it didn’t really affect my life because no one that knew was involved so I just tried to forget about it. What I remember about the day of the twin towers is how all those people died, watching them fall out of the buildings, all the people who died in the planes, ad all those who tried to save them.

If I where stuck in the World Trade Center or in one of the hijacked planes I would have totally freaked out and attacked the hijackers even if it meant loosing my life. I would have called the fire department and told them to get me out of there as soon as possible or I would have called my mother and informed her about my situation. I would have told her to make sure not to feel depressed even though I wasn’t going to make it, because I would not like her to suffer because of my death.
